Laser-Cut vs CNC-Routed Acrylic: Choosing the Right Process
Laser-cut and CNC-routed acrylic can look similar in a finished product, but the two processes suit different jobs. Here’s how we decide which to use for a given project.
Laser Cutting
Laser cutting uses a focused beam to cut and often polish the edge in the same pass, which makes it ideal for detailed shapes, fine text, small mementos and anything where a clean, glass-smooth edge matters.
CNC Routing
CNC routing uses a rotating bit to cut through thicker acrylic sheet, and it’s generally faster and more cost-effective for large panels, sign boards and bulk production runs where ultra-fine detail isn’t the priority.
Which Process Fits Your Project?
For mementos, tags and small detailed pieces, laser cutting wins on finish quality — see our acrylic tags for an example. For large sign panels and thicker sheet, CNC routing is usually the more practical and economical choice.
Can the Two Be Combined?
Yes — many of our projects use CNC routing for the main panel shape and laser cutting for fine detail elements like logos or text, giving the best balance of cost and finish.

FAQs
Is laser cutting more expensive than CNC routing?
It can be for larger pieces, since laser cutting is generally slower on thick sheet, but it’s often the better choice for detailed small items.
Can laser cutting handle thick acrylic sheet?
It can, but very thick sheet is often more efficiently cut with CNC routing.
Does CNC routing leave rough edges?
Routed edges typically need a separate polishing step, unlike laser-cut edges which often come out polished directly.
Which process is better for logos and text?
Laser cutting, for its precision on fine detail and clean finish.
